March 11, 2011

WORCESTER, MA--  The 2010-2011 season came to an end on Friday night for the Wachusett Mountaineers as the squad fell 5-2 to the Hudson Hawks in the District Championship game at the DCU Center.  After two impressive tournament wins over Shrewsbury and Marlboro, the Mountaineers (16-5-2) faced their toughest challenge yet in the defending-champion Hawks.  The top-seed from Hudson proved to be too much for the Green & White on Friday night, though, and jumped out to a four goal lead that Wachusett could not erase.

Wachusett Finishes 14-4-2 for the 2010-2011 Season
Mountaineers Heading Back to Playoffs for Fourth Straight Year

March 1, 2011

HOLDEN, MA--  After finishing the season with a record of 14-4-2, Coach Matt Lane's third-ranked Wachusett Mountaineers are heading back to the Central Mass Division 3 District Playoffs for the fourth straight year.  The Mountaineers have fallen in the district semi-finals the last three seasons, but look to break that streak on Saturday, March 5 when they take on the all too familiar Shrewsbury Colonials at 7:30pm at the Northstar Youth Forum in Westboro.  The Colonials ousted the Green & White from the District tournament in both 2009 and 2010.  With eleven seniors on the roster, Wachusett boasts an experienced group of veteran players accustomed to the high emotions of the playoff atmosphere.  Come out on Saturday decked out in green and white to support the team!

The following is Head Coach Matt Lane's season summary for all Goal-A-Thon participants and Wachusett hockey fans:

The team went unbeaten in its last 7 games with a record of 6 wins 0 losses and 1 tie making their total season recort 14 - 4 - 2.

Wachusett has earned the number 3 seed in the Central Mass District Playoffs and will host number 6 Shrewsbury in the first round next Saturday, March 5, at 7:30 PM at the Northstar Forum in Westboro.

Solid TEAM play has been the focus over the last couple of weeks.  Almost all our players have found their way onto the scoresheet in the last 7 games and overall team defense has improved.

Five players from Wachusett have been recognized as Quinn Conference All Stars and Central Mass All Stars.  They are:  Steve Iacaboni, Christian Helger, Dylan Lamica, Jeremy Bennie, and Mark Baker.  Congratulations to them on a well-deserved honor.

Senior Captain Steve Iacaboni leads the team in goals, assists, and points with 21 goals, 19 assists, for 40 total points.  He currently has 98 points for his career (52 goals and 46 assists), just 2 shy of the elite 100-point club here at Wachusett.

Senior Asst Captain Christian Helger has been an outstanding backbone of this team starting 18 games in goal for Wachusett.  He has faced 357 shots, only allowing 28 goals for a 1.58 goals agains average which leads the Quinn Conference.  His save % is .922.

Senior Asst Captain Dylan Lamica has anchored the defense this season.  He is second on the team in +/- with a +25, an awesome number for a defenseman that plays as many minutes as Dylan does.  Dylan has career bests of 4 goals and 8 assists for 12 points this season.

Juniors Jeremy Bennie and Dan Wisniewski are the center and the left wing respectively on the first line with Iacaboni.  J Bennie has 10 goals and 14 assists for 24 points and "Wizo" has 10 goals and 9 assists for 19 points. These are career bests for both players.

Seniors Doug McKenna, Matt Bernard, and Steve Trychon have come together to form a solid second line.  These are 3 of the hardest working players on the team.  They do a great job penalty killing and neutralizing any offense an opposing team has.  Trychon has come on strong lately with 9 goals and 7 assists.  McKenna has 4 goals and 3 assists and Bernard scored his first of the season yesterday for 1 goal and 4 assists.

Junior Defenseman Mark Baker leads the defense in scoring with 6 goals and 15 assists for 21 points.

The third line is led by Sophomore Colin Bennie who has 8 goals and 7 assists for 15 points.  Senior Cam Hanify has scored 2 goals and 3 assists for 5 points and winger, Junior Ryan McCarthy has 3 assists on the season.  C Bennie is also an integral part of our Power Play and Penalty Kill units.

Our fourth line consists of Senior Charlie Davis, Junior Joe MacAulay and Freshman Marc Happy.

Our other defenseman are Seniors Anthony Caggiano and Zac Strasser, Juniors Sean Heeley, Zack Smith, and Ryan Hamilton, and Freshmen Tucker White and Colin O'Brien.

Our backup goalie is Sophomore Ryan Fitzpatrick.  Ryan has played in 2.3 games this season facing 29 shots and giving up 5 goals for a 2.17 GAA and a Save % of .828.  Ryan has proven to that he will be ready to take over next season.

Thanks for all your support.
